Emer of the Green Eyes
(Dedicated to my Loving Wife Deb)
***
While traveling the path from Emain Macha to the shore line of Dun Dalgan
I spied an enchantress come towards me through the mist of the sea
As I gazed into her eyes I was dazzled by the depth of their emerald beauty
For this was Emer child of the Fair Ones
As I peered into those eyes where I saw rage in myself, I saw gentleness in her
And I knew strength
Where I saw searching in myself, I saw introspection in her
And I knew wisdom
Where I saw my complete maleness, I saw in Emer the totality of Womanhood
And I knew utter balance
Where I saw lust in myself, she balanced it with sensuality
And I knew Love
Where I felt passion stirred within my heart, I saw all of nature in her eyes
And knew True Beauty
Where I felt sorrow in my heart, she filled me with joy
And I knew appreciation and contentment
Where I saw abundance, she showed me compassion
And I knew generosity
Where I saw change and anxiety, she showed me adventure
And I knew growth
Where I saw a bubbling cauldron of thoughts and emotions in my mind,
I saw the reflection of the Divine in her eyes…
And I knew myself

Well, this is a very nice poem. I like how it shows the two competing emotions between him and her, and how it leads to a healthy balance.
I feel like most couples are people who complement each other. It does no good for both to a carbon copy of the other…walking lock step and not having some differences. There’s no fun, no spark, and no energy in a relationship such as that.
This poem does a very good job of illustrating how those differences make a relationship interesting in terms of it being complementary and fulfilling for both sides. There’s a reason why God created Eve!

This is a beautiful poem that explores a romance based in spiritual depth and balance between partners. I have always loved ancient Celtic mythology, and the unconditional love of Emer for Cu Chullain, even when he was not faithful to her. This piece really puts into perspective just how deeply she really did effect him and bring completion to him as a person. Two thumbs up, Tim Mather! Your wife is blessed to have a husband who can write such beautiful poetry in her honor! 🙂

The more familiar we become with the ancient Celtic stories and myths the more we will understand the universal yearning for truth, for God which resulted in Christ being recognized and welcomed, rather than the slaughter of Christians found in the Empire! The Celtic Old Testament readied them for the deepening concept of the Christ.

Thank You all so much for your kind words, I truly am blessed to have a wife that brings out the very best in me. I love Celtic mythology there is much we can learn from it. Cait, I love your comment on how Pagans and Christians found a way to live in harmony, we can learn much from them. Druids considered Jesus to be the Arch Druid as his teachings were in harmony with druid thought.

I know I’m about a year late, but Tim Mather, do you have any recommendations for books of Celtic mythology?
